How To Install the Omnitracs XRS Relay

The Omnitracs XRS Relay is a Bluetooth-enabled device that sends engine and location data from your vehicle to Omnitracs XRS Mobile. A cable is provided with each Omnitracs XRS Relay that can be used to connect the Omnitracs XRS Relay to the vehicle diagnostic port. The cable includes an extra end that will remain available for diagnostics or other devices.

Preparation

Locate the vehicle diagnostic port. The diagnostic port on the vehicle is normally located underneath the dash next to the driver's exterior wall of the vehicle. This diagnostic port will be used to connect the Omnitracs XRS Relay to the vehicle.

Select a space on top of the dash for the Omnitracs XRS Relay to reside. Make sure the device has a clear view of the sky for satellite communication. Wipe off the dash location you have chosen so that the area is free of dust or debris and the Omnitracs XRS Relay can adhere properly.

The Relay MUST be mounted directly on top of the dash with a clear view of the sky for satellite communication. In order to be compliant with the ELD mandate, the indicator lights on the Omnitracs XRS Relay must remain visible to the driver during use.

  1. All GPS devices, including the Omnitracs XRS Relay, need the following in order to capture an accurate location:
  2. A clear view of the sky. The Omnitracs XRS Relay needs to be mounted on the dash of the vehicle to ensure this.
  3. An unobstructed view of three cardinal directions at 10 degrees angle above the horizon, meaning:
  4. A clear line of sight to the North, South, East, or West at all times. If more than two of these directions are blocked, you may not get a GPS location.
  5. A clear line of sight that is at least 10 degrees angle above the Horizon. If the only viewable angles are below this, you may not get a GPS location.

Installation Steps

Perform the following to install an Omnitracs XRS Relay:

  1. Connect the 9-pin end of the Omnitracs XRS Relay Y-cable to the vehicle's diagnostic connection port.
  2. Apply light pressure from the cable end and spin in either direction until the cable end slides into the diagnostic port connection.
  3. Grasp the lock ring at the end of the cable while applying pressure toward the port connection and turn the lock ring clockwise approximately 1 quarter turn till the connection locks into place.
  4. Connect the Y-cable to the Omnitracs XRS Relay.
  5. Finger-tighten the connection screws and ensure that the connector is firmly seated.
  6. Check the Omnitracs XRS Relay's connection status.
  7. A blinking green light indicates the device is working properly. It may take a few seconds for the green light to start blinking.
  8. Select a space on the dash for the Omnitracs XRS Relay to reside. Make sure the device has a clear view of the sky for satellite communication.
  9. Ensure the location you have chosen is clean. If necessary, clean the dash location so that the surface is free of dust and debris.
  10. Remove the plastic adhesive protector from each of the two strips on the bottom of the Omnitracs XRS Relay.
  11. Place the Omnitracs XRS Relay on the dash so that the status lights are visible to the driver.
  12. Press firmly so that the adhesive attaches securely to the dashboard.
  13. Tuck the cable out of the way along the dashboard-windshield line.
  14. Cable-tie the excess cabling and secure it under the dash.
